2009 LVMF : PV+PS + Additional Constraints Map

The draft LVMF proposes a number of additional constraints (blue) in addition to the Protected Vistas (red) and Protected Silhouettes (orange). Our interpretation of these is mapped above. Although these are not referred to as 'geometrically defined', many appear to be pretty much the same thing. Additionally, there are a number of questions raised by the wording used in the LVMF (i.e. "development which visually interacts/visually connects with ..." etc) and clarification is required. Please note: where there appears to be ambiguity/lack of clarity in the wording, we have NOT mapped the most restrictive interpretation - and the actual intent/constraints proposed may be more impactful than is shown on the map above. We will update the map as this becomes clearer. To see map full screen, use the expand button (+ sign) top right of map frame.

2009 LVMF: Protected Vistas ('PV') + Protected Silhouettes ('PS') Map

Above: The proposed 2009 LVMF 'Protected Silhouette' constraints (orange) overlaid on the proposed Protected Vistas (red). Palace of Westminster and Tower of London shown, Greenwich off map.

2009 LVMF, Page 23: "Where it is clear that any change to the silhouette of these World Heritage Sites (as seen from the Viewing Place) will damage their background setting, the Management Plan will specify that this silhouette is to be preserved..... In considering planning applications the Mayor will, and boroughs should, take account of, and give appropriate weight to, the provisions of the World Heritage Site Management Plans".

Geometric Constraints in Google Earth

Above shows the proposed geometric constraints of the Protected Vistas in Google Earth. The Protected Vistas were mapped from the OS coordinates supplied in the draft LVMF, with an allowance made for the curvature of the earth. This presentation method allows the user a different, and more fluid way to view London and the constraints proposed, but as the Google Earth coordinate system has some limitations, the positions of the 3D vistas shown in Google Earth will be approximate.

To navigate, use the mouse zoom wheel (closer/ further), and hold the shift button with arrow keys (left right, up and down)
